Malta - Defiant during even the darkest days of 1942

Post 18th May 2022

Paymaster Midshipman G.A. (Mick) Stoke DSC RN served on the anti-aircraft cruiser HMS Carlisle during some of the most dangerous and fiercely fought Malta convoys in early 1942, when there was no Allied air cover. The Luftwaffe and the Italian airforce had control over the skies from airfields in Cyrenaica/Libya, Sicily, Greece and Crete.

The Malta convoy trip from Alexandria was known as going into "Bomb Alley"!!

The Maltese people suffered hugely and almost starved to death as insufficient food and supplies could be got through.

They still remember the courage of the men who manned the ships of the Royal and Merchant Navies on this convoys.
